The Daily Spin – NFL Cash Game Edition – Week 6

It is frustrating when you really nail your core plays, but then come up a little bit short as was the case in Week 5 of my cash games on DK. One of the toughest parts of cash games now is that injury information is so readily available so that when a player like Dalvin Cook is out, Alexander Mattison is owned by everyone. This has the effect of reducing our team from nine slots to eight slots and also helps to push ownership to other chalky players.

Fortunately, I really liked my FanDuel team last week and put that into play more aggressively than normal so that I had a good split between both sites so I ended up with a break even week overall. I do not always put much money into play on FanDuel since it always feels too easy to build teams, but when I do like the look of my team, I will take some shots during the year. What I liked about my FD roster was that I could fit Adams, Henry and DJ Moore. Although DJ busted last week in a spot where I thought he’d be huge, I also had some luck on my side. Trey Lance was incredibly cheap on FD relative to other QBs so I was able to avoid the Daniel Jones concussion there which gave me a reasonable enough showing to get over the pay line.

The other mistake I want to highlight in my play on DK versus FD is that it is really important to use a RB in the flex over a WR if possible. I let myself get caught up in playing two punt WRs on DK in Jaylen Waddle and Laviska Shenault which proved costly. The case for both players was fantastic. With Devante Parker out and the Bucs banged up in the secondary and possessing such a high powered air attack, I thought Waddle was in line for a huge target share. He was non existent in the offense. That happens with rookie WRs.

I am still confused by what the Jags were doing with Shenault. That was bizarre. He was not targeted until the 4th quarter and when they finally did, he broke it for 58 yards. Sadly, Lawrence missed him for a wide open TD a couple of plays later or he could have salvaged his day. I guess Urban Meyer is going to run the offense through Dan Arnold for the rest of the season since that is what they spent the whole game doing last week. With Chark out, Shenault seemed like the natural beneficiary to pick up extra targets. In a game where the Jags were down all day, it is inexcusable that Shenault was not more involved.

You can usually get away with playing one of those punt plays at WR, but when you force them in and use a WR in the flex, you better not miss, especially when there were so many quality, cheap plays at RB last week with guys like Damien Williams and Leonard Fournette staring me in the face. Both of those plays delivered value at their price and there really was no question that they would with the touches I expected them to get.

What kills me is that it was late tinkering that cost me a win. I got nervous about using Ricky Seals-Jones at TE, not sure if he would really pick up many targets and shifted to Evan Engram. That pushed me down from Williams in the flex to Waddle at WR and then moving Lamb from WR to flex. It also gave me the funds to go up to Washington instead of the Eagles who I originally started at defense. Obviously, Daniel Jones going down with a concussion was the breaking point as even then I could have rallied if Jones had played even reasonably well, but that is a part of the game. I will never understand how the do not coach these QBs a little better on plays like that as Jones had no chance of scoring and needed an option to either throw it or should have been told to just throw it into the stands.

The big difference between my FD win and DK loss was that I simply used a third RB that I knew was going to get a ton of volume. Ross Dwelly was super cheap and though he dudded out, it gave me the room to get in my core. Lance was not great, but he ran enough to at least get to a reasonable floor performance and he was heavily owned so he did not have to do a ton of damage. Fournette looked solid again and I survived Waddle and even a poor performance from DJ Moore to get into the money.
