The Daily Spin – NFL Cash Game Selections – Week 16

We are up to the second to last week of the regular season which means that we only have a few more weeks of meaningful football for DFS purposes before we have to go back to spending time with our families again on Sundays. Before that befalls us, we do get to enjoy some tremendous football this weekend. Saturday gives us a rare tripleheader and Jeff did a full column breaking down just that slate of games in particular so be sure to check it out. The three games are actually better than what we had for the three on Thanksgiving so it should be a fun day as all of the games have playoff implications.

As we get into the final weeks, there are a few ideas that are important to consider when crafting your teams. Week 17 will put this to the extreme, but even Week 16 you need to start paying attention. When teams are either eliminated from playoff contention or clinch and are virtually locked into a particular seed, they begin to shuffle personnel around accordingly. For teams that are not going to the playoffs, it is not unusual to see a slew of players head to the IR to end their seasons. Did they all get hurt at once? Of course not. However, once the games lose meaning, it does not make a lot of sense to have guys fighting through injuries and risking further pains when there is little to be gained. This is something that you should be following even if it does not hit certain skill players that we would normally use. If you see a team put half of the offensive line on the IR, that should alert you that the team might not be ready to put forth the effort you desire.

On the other end of the spectrum, you start to see teams that are locked into their seed a week or two early. Now, most teams are going to be fighting all the way to the end of Week 17 to improve their position, but there are always instances where a seed is a near lock for a team where they cannot really move up or down. These teams also tend to take their foot off the gas around this time of year so be sure to fully understand the circumstances around each team.

The other type of team that flails late in the year is the squad that is a mess on and off the field. When a coach or entire organization loses the locker room, things can get ugly. Players that are normally stars suddenly flounder. A single bad play can deflate a bad team so quickly that you see them give up right before your eyes. Try to avoid these situations. It does not necessarily revolve around the teams with the worst records. We have seen some poor teams show a good amount of fight late in the season. Typically, this is a phenomenom that happens to veteran teams that have underperformed expectations by a good degree who give up more in frustration than due to a lack of talent. These are teams that you really want to avoid late in the season.
