The Daily Spin – NFL Cash Game Selections – Week 8

An up and down season continued for me last weekend as my Vikings continued to roll in winning their third (and now 4th) in a row and Johnny V hit his pick for us as the Ravens won in resounding fashion over the Seahawks in Seattle. Unfortunately, the Falcons completely bottomed out last week on their season and Matt Ryan played awful which gave me only about 4 points from my QB and left me fighting from behind the rest of the day.

It was definitely a tricky week in that the injury report on Sunday forced me into scramble mode during the last 90 minutes to reconstruct the team that I had put together on Friday that I felt really good about. I knew things were going to get weird when news started to trickle out of Green Bay that Allison had a chance to play based on Saturday’s injury news and that it was beginning to sound like MVS was going to give it a go even with multiple injuries. If either one of them had been ruled out, I was going to play Allen Lazard 100% of the time as I had written about it my column. It was a great spot for Rodgers and just a matter of who would be the beneficiaries of his passes.

On Sunday, the news hit that both Allison and MVS would play Sunday which forced me back to my computer to rerun some numbers and to shake up my lineup. I just could not risk Lazard seeing very little or no action as I was not sure just how the WR rotation was going to work out for Green Bay. My initial roster looked like this:

Jared Goff 6200 25.02
Dalvin Cook 8000 30.9
Leonard Fournette 7000 19.5
Cooper Kupp 7400 11
TY Hilton 5900 19.4
Allen Lazard 3000 7.2
Hunter Henry 4000 15.7
Chris Carson 6500 10.4
Colts 2000 9
50000 148.12

Unfortunately, I did not have an easy fix for having to move up from Lazard and that forced me to cut down from Cook, which was obviously a disappointment. I did end up swapping down to Josh Jacobs who played well, but had 19.4 so 11.5 points were lost there. What killed me was that I ended up using Larry Fitzgerald in the WR slot as I had it down to: Fitz, Chark, Golladay, Brown and Robinson. I figured Fitz had a really strong matchup against an awful Giants secondary and his floor is usually pretty steady as you can almost always count on at least 5/50 as a worst case scenario. That did not work out at all and I might just have to be done with Fitz who has about the same floor and ceiling these days. At that point, I had enough left over to get Matt Ryan or Jared Goff and leaned towards the home team going against an overhauled secondary rather than the better matchup as the Falcons defense is terrible. I thought it was a coin flip type of decision, but missing the right call led to my downfall as I ended up with only 110 points and did not cash for the week.

It has been a season where small decisions one way or the other similar to the one above is the difference between success and failure each week. I do not think any of the swaps that I made were all that bad based upon the information that was available, but there is only so much you can do each week when dealing with unknowns. It was not a lot different from the David Johnson/Chase Edmonds situation for the Cards last week. We had seen DJ play through an injury the week prior and do well and so as he moved through the practice week and it looked more and more like he would play, it obviously made it tough to consider Edmonds as an option for cash. What we did not know was just how banged up DJ really was and that the Cardinals had decided to game the injury report for the week since DJ was really there only for an emergency situation. This is why I typically try to veer away from these situations when building my cash rosters and more towards them for GPP situations. You can exploit ownership numbers in tournament play, but if you end up on the wrong end in cash, it can end your week quickly. Lazard played plenty of snaps and did enough so that the salary savings would have been a huge benefit, but there was still too much risk in trotting him out for the week not knowing what his usage would be like beforehand.

Now it is time to move on to Week 8 which I think will be one of the more unique weeks for cash games that we have seen so far this year. There are a lot more options at RB and WR to work with this week compared to other weeks where it really felt like we had obvious plays in most spots and only had to make a couple of our own choices for the week. It think ownership will be spread out much more this week than in previous weeks as we have a 12 game slate on Sunday and a lot of low priced value plays to be considered for the week. We are still awaiting word on a couple of key injury situations, but overall, it should be a fun slate with plenty of interesting options to consider.
